Course Description
General English is a 3 units degree course, required for students of different levels and disciplines in medical sciences universities.
The main objective is to improve the students' English language proficiency through developing their skills in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Most exercises are aimed at enhancing students' flexibility in using English to express their ideas and to reinforce and refine their knowledge and skills on the basis of their previous information.
The duration of the course is 17 weeks with the last week excluded for final exam, in accordance with the university calendar. With diligent work through the 16 week sessions, students will be able to make significant progress towards the following goals and objectives:
Linguistic objectives.
A. Reading. Students will be able to
1. develop reading comprehension through identifying main ideas, supporting details, and the relationship between ideas.
2. improve the ability to guess word meanings from context and affix clues.
3. identify cohesive devices (transitions, repetitions, pronoun referents).
4. read critically to differentiate fact, opinion, inference, and speculation.
5. improve the ability to guess word meanings from content and affix clues.
B. Writing. Students will be able to:
1. develop the ability to write grammatically accurate sentences on the basis of a guided summary and guided composition exercises.
2. increase the clarity in variety of expressions, while improving structural accuracy at the sentence and paragraph levels.
3. write summaries, an author's main idea and purpose as accurately as possible.
C. Listening. Students will develop the ability to
1. listen to the teacher and understand the messages in connection with the subject being taught.
2. listen to the other students and try to understand their intentions.
3. listen to the tapes provided in class, with the purpose of taking part in class discussion afterwards.
D. Speaking. Students will try
1. to answer the teacher's question in English
2. to take part in class discussions in connection with subject being taught.
3. to express themselves in free discussions and presentations.
E. Grammar will be taught through reading and writing activities

Class requirement and rules
1. Class will begin promptly at ……………., please show courtesy and respect to your classmates and teacher by being on time in your seat, and ready to begin.
2. Purchase your reading materials soon enough and have them with you in class. "Do not share books with a friend".
3. Do not leave the class in the middle, unless for an emergency
4. Turn off your cellphones and bibbers.
Attendance policy: Four weeks of absence is allowed, but if you must be absent, talk to the teacher in advance.
